3D Printing Service Estimate
Wondering what's behind your 3D printing service estimate? It's a formula of four key factors: the amount of material used, the space your part occupies in the machine, the total print time, and the manual post-processing required.
How to Design a More Cost-Effective Part for 3D Printing
Getting a 3D printing service estimate can feel like magic. You upload a file, and a number appears. But what's actually happening behind the scenes? Understanding the key factors that drive your final price is the first step to designing more cost-effective parts and making smarter manufacturing decisions.
Let's demystify the process. Your estimate is primarily determined by four key variables:
Material Volume: This is the most straightforward factor. It's the physical amount of material (resin, powder, or filament) required to build your part. A larger, solid part will always cost more than a smaller, hollow one.
Machine Space (Bounding Box): Your part occupies a certain three-dimensional space inside the machine. A very tall, thin part can sometimes cost more than a short, wide part of the same volume because it takes up more of the machine's valuable Z-axis height.
Machine Time: This is the actual time it takes for the machine to print your part. More complex geometries with fine details can increase the print time, which in turn increases the cost.
Manual Labor & Post-Processing: After printing, every part requires some form of manual labor, from powder removal (SLS) and support removal (SLA/FDM) to curing and final inspection. More complex parts may require more intensive labor.
By understanding these levers, you can work with a partner like us to optimize your design for the most efficient and cost-effective outcome.
