AISI 1020 Mild Steel CNC Machining
AISI 1020 is one of the most widely used plain carbon steels in the manufacturing industry. With a slightly higher manganese content than 1018, it offers a better response to case hardening and improved strength while maintaining exceptional weldability. At JUCHENG, we process AISI 1020 in both Hot Rolled and Cold Rolled conditions. It is our standard choice for producing turned parts like axles, spindles, and pins that require a tough core and a wear-resistant surface after heat treatment. Its versatility makes it suitable for everything from heavy machinery components to automotive brackets.
1020 Mild Steel

JUCHENG's 1020 Machining Capabilities

We tailor our machining approach based on the specific condition of the 1020 steel:
  • Production Turning: 1020 is excellent for turning operations. We use automated CNC lathes to produce high volumes of shafts, spacers, and pins efficiently.
  • Welded Assemblies: Since 1020 does not harden significantly from the heat of welding, we machine components that are then MIG/TIG welded into larger frames or chassis structures.
  • Surface Hardening: We offer Carburizing and Cyaniding services to give 1020 parts a hard outer case (RC 50-60) for wear resistance, while the low-carbon core remains ductile to prevent snapping.
  • Grinding: For shafts requiring tight bearing fits, we perform cylindrical grinding after machining to achieve tolerances of g6/h7.

Advantages of CNC Machining 1020

Advantage Detailed Description Key Benefit
High Ductility Retains toughness and plasticity even in cold conditions. Resists brittle fracture under shock loads or heavy vibration.
Case Hardening Responds well to surface hardening treatments. Ideal for gears, cams, and ratchets that need a hard skin but tough body.
Excellent Weldability Can be welded by all traditional methods without pre-heating. Perfect for parts integrated into complex welded machinery.
Good Machinability Machines well (approx. 72% rating), especially in the cold-drawn state. Reduces cycle times and tool wear for cost-effective production.
Versatility Available in varied forms (plate, bar, tube). Suitable for a vast array of structural and mechanical applications.

Technical Parameters & Material Standards

We process 1020 to meet international equivalents:
Grade Category Specification Characteristics & Ideal Uses
AISI 1020 Standard Carbon Steel Characteristics: Low hardenability properties. High machinability. Provides a good balance of strength and ductility. Can be forged effectively.
Uses: Axles, general machine parts, bolts, cold headed parts, brackets.
C22 / 1.0402 European Equivalent Characteristics: Similar chemical composition and mechanical performance.
Uses: Engineering components requiring moderate strength.

CNC Machining Guidelines for 1020

  • Surface Finish: In the Hot Rolled condition, 1020 has a scale surface that must be machined off to reach clean metal. Cold Rolled 1020 offers a better initial finish.
  • Chip Breaking: Like 1018, it is ductile and can produce stringy chips. We use chip-breaking geometries on our inserts to ensure smooth automated running.
  • Heat Treatment: 1020 is not a "through-hardening" steel. It should only be case hardened. Quenching thick sections will not result in a uniform hardness throughout.
  • Corrosion: It is not corrosion-resistant. Parts should be Plated (Zinc), Painted, or Black Oxided immediately after machining to prevent rust.

Application Scenarios

  • Automotive: Camshafts (case hardened), piston pins, clutch hubs, welded brackets.
  • Heavy Machinery: Crane pins, conveyor rollers, hydraulic cylinder mounts.
  • Construction: Heavy-duty anchor bolts, structural tie rods.
  • General Engineering: Spacers, bushings, and lightly stressed gears.
