Stainless Steel 17-4 PH CNC Machining Material
Stainless Steel 17-4 PH (Precipitation Hardening), also known as Grade 630, is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel used for applications requiring high strength and a moderate level of corrosion resistance. It stands out because its mechanical properties can be adjusted through heat treatment. At JUCHENG, we specialize in machining 17-4 PH in various conditions—from the annealed "Condition A" to fully hardened states like H900. This versatility makes it the premier choice for aerospace structural components, oil & gas valve parts, and high-performance shafts that must endure extreme stress without rusting.

JUCHENG's 17-4 PH Machining Capabilities

Processing precipitation-hardening steel requires a deep understanding of metallurgy and machining dynamics. We offer:
  • Heat Treatment Expertise: We machine parts in the softer annealed state and then perform precise precipitation hardening (aging) processes (e.g., H900, H1025, H1150) to achieve your specific hardness and strength requirements.
  • Hard Milling: For parts requiring extreme precision, we can finish-machine fully hardened 17-4 PH using advanced cermet and ceramic tooling to eliminate post-heat-treat distortion.
  • Dimensional Stability: 17-4 PH is known for low distortion during heat treatment. We optimize our machining strategy to leverage this, holding tight geometric tolerances.
  • Passivation: We provide chemical passivation to maximize corrosion resistance after machining, ensuring the passive oxide layer is fully restored.

Advantages of CNC Machining 17-4 PH

Advantage Detailed Description Key Benefit
Adjustable Strength Mechanical properties can be tuned via heat treatment (aging). Allows customization of hardness vs. toughness for specific applications.
High Yield Strength Can achieve yield strengths up to 1100-1300 MPa (in H900 condition). Comparable to high-strength alloy steels, but with stainless properties.
Good Corrosion Resistance Better than 400-series (martensitic) stainless, approaching that of 304. Suitable for chemical, petrochemical, and food processing environments.
Dimensional Stability Minimal distortion during heat treatment compared to quench-and-temper steels. Ideal for long, slender parts or complex geometries requiring tight tolerances.
Wear Resistance Hardened surfaces resist galling and wear. Excellent for gears, pump shafts, and valve stems.

Technical Parameters & Material Standards

We process 17-4 PH in various conditions tailored to your needs:
Grade Category Condition / Temper Characteristics & Ideal Uses
Condition A Solution Annealed Characteristics: The standard supply condition. Softest state (though still hard compared to 304). Used for machining before heat treatment.
Uses: General machining stock, parts requiring forming.
Condition H900 Peak Aged (900°F) Characteristics: Maximum strength and hardness. Lower toughness/ductility.
Uses: High-stress gears, aircraft fittings, pump shafts requiring max wear resistance.
Condition H1150 Overaged (1150°F) Characteristics: Lower strength but significantly improved toughness and ductility. Good for low temperatures.
Uses: Valve parts, heavy-duty structural components subjected to shock.

CNC Machining Guidelines for 17-4 PH

  • Machinability: In Condition A, machinability is fair (similar to 304). In hardened states (H900), it becomes much more difficult, requiring rigid setups and slower speeds.
  • Tooling: We use premium micro-grain carbide tools with TiAlN coatings to withstand the heat and abrasion.
  • Coolant: High-pressure coolant is essential to break chips and extend tool life.
  • Post-Machining: Allowance must be left if machining is done before heat treatment, although 17-4 PH shrinks very predictably (approx. 0.0004-0.0006 in/in).

Application Scenarios

  • Aerospace: Engine components, structural flap tracks, landing gear parts.
  • Oil & Gas: Gate valves, downhole tooling, pump shafts exposed to sour gas.
  • Medical: Surgical instruments requiring high strength and edge retention.
  • Food Processing: Mixing blades and drive shafts (where 304 is too weak).
  • Marine: Propeller shafts and high-strength fasteners.
