A-Series Air Hardening Tool Steel Machining
When a tool requires better wear resistance than basic carbon steel but higher toughness than brittle high-carbon D-series alloys, A-Series Tool Steels are the ideal solution. Classified as "Air Hardening" steels, grades like AISI A2 and A6 are renowned for their exceptional dimensional stability during heat treatment. Because they are quenched in still air rather than oil or water, they suffer minimal internal stress and distortion. At JUCHENG, we utilize A-Series steels to manufacture complex punches, dies, and gauges where retaining tight tolerances after hardening is the top priority.
Tool Steel A Series

JUCHENG's A-Series Fabrication Capabilities

We optimize the machining process to leverage the stability of air-hardening steels:
  • Complex Geometry Machining: Since A-Series steels distort very little, we can machine complex shapes and thin walls closer to net shape before heat treatment, reducing expensive post-grinding work.
  • Vacuum Heat Treatment: To prevent surface decarburization during the slow air-cooling process, we use advanced vacuum furnaces. This ensures the part comes out bright and fully hardened (typically 57-62 HRC).
  • Wire EDM Profiling: A2 is a favorite for EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining). We produce intricate die openings and punches with high precision.
  • Precision Surface Grinding: For critical mating surfaces, we grind parts after hardening to ensure flatness and parallelism within microns.

Advantages of CNC Machining A-Series Steel

Advantage Detailed Description Key Benefit
Lowest Distortion Air quenching is much gentler than oil or water quenching. The safest choice for intricate dies or long parts that might warp or crack during hardening.
Superior Toughness Much tougher than D2 steel (less prone to chipping). Ideal for tools subjected to shock or heavy impact.
Deep Hardenability Hardens uniformly throughout the cross-section. Ensures reliable strength even in large blocks.
Good Wear Resistance Better wear life than O1, though slightly less than D2. Suitable for medium-run production tooling.
Machinability Machines well in the annealed state. Allows for efficient removal of material for complex molds.

Technical Parameters & Material Standards

We process the most versatile grades in the A-Series family:
Grade Category Specification Characteristics & Ideal Uses
AISI A2 Standard Air Hardening Characteristics: The most widely used general-purpose tool steel. Contains 5% Chrome. Excellent balance of wear resistance and toughness. Deep hardening.
Uses: Blanking dies, forming punches, shear blades, master gauges, intricate machine parts.
AISI A6 Low Temp Air Hardening Characteristics: Hardens at a lower temperature than A2. Offers the absolute lowest distortion of any tool steel. Extremely stable.
Uses: Delicate gauges, precision fixtures, dies with thin sections that are prone to cracking.
AISI A8 High Toughness Characteristics: Formulated for higher toughness than A2. Resists chipping under impact.
Uses: Heavy-duty punches, drift pins, pneumatic tools, hammers.

CNC Machining Guidelines for A-Series

  • Grinding Stock: Although distortion is low, we still leave 0.15mm - 0.25mm of stock for final grinding to ensure perfect geometry.
  • Drilling: Deep holes should be drilled with care to avoid work hardening. We use peck cycles and adequate coolant.
  • EDM Note: Like all tool steels, EDM cutting leaves a brittle "white layer" on the surface. We perform a skim pass or polishing to remove this layer to prevent surface micro-cracks.
  • Hard Milling: For A2 (up to 60 HRC), we can perform hard milling using CBN tools for final detailing, avoiding the need for EDM in some cases.

Application Scenarios

  • Metal Stamping: Medium-volume production dies, forming punches, coining dies.
  • Plastic Molding: Injection mold cavities for abrasive plastics (where P20 is too soft).
  • Industrial Knives: Shear blades, slitting cutters, woodworking tools.
  • Precision Gauges: Ring gauges, plug gauges, and fixtures requiring long-term stability.
  • Machine Components: Cams, bushings, and guides that require high surface hardness.
