Elastomeric & Impact RIM Systems
For components that must withstand repeated impact, vibration, or abrasion without fracturing, Elastomeric RIM is the ultimate manufacturing solution. Unlike rigid plastics that may crack under stress, Elastomeric RIM systems utilize specialized polyurethane formulations designed to simulate the toughness and flexibility of Polypropylene (PP), TPO, or EPDM. At JUCHENG, we use this technology to mold large, durable parts that can absorb energy and bounce back. It is the material of choice for the automotive and heavy equipment industries, delivering "unbreakable" performance for exterior body panels and protective guards.
Elastomeric & Impact RIM Systems

JUCHENG's Elastomeric RIM Capabilities

Molding flexible, high-impact parts requires precise process control to ensure consistent density and surface quality. JUCHENG offers:
  • Large-Format Molding: We can produce massive elastomeric parts like full-width truck bumpers, fenders, and spoilers in a single shot using our large-capacity mixing heads.
  • Flexible Finishing: Standard paints crack on flexible parts. We apply specialized elastomeric primers and paints that flex with the material, ensuring the finish remains intact even upon impact.
  • Insert Molding: We encapsulate metal mounting brackets or stiffeners directly into the flexible urethane, creating hybrid parts that are rigid where needed and flexible where it counts.
  • Rapid Cycling: Our optimized curing cycles allow for faster demolding of resilient parts compared to rigid systems.

Advantages of Elastomeric RIM

Advantage Detailed Description Key Benefit
Extreme Impact Resistance The material deforms elastically under impact and recovers its shape instead of shattering. Essential for bumpers, crash-resistant panels, and protective covers.
High Elongation Can be bent and twisted significantly without tearing or permanent deformation. Suitable for parts subject to dynamic stress or vibration.
Low-Temperature Toughness Retains flexibility and does not become brittle even in freezing conditions (-30°C). Critical for exterior automotive parts and outdoor machinery.
Abrasion Resistance Resists wear and tear from grit, sand, and friction. Ideal for wheel arch liners, mudguards, and construction equipment covers.
Class-A Surface Capable of achieving a high-gloss automotive finish when painted. Meets aesthetic standards for exterior vehicle bodywork.

Technical Parameters & Material Grades

We offer impact-modified systems tailored for different levels of flexibility:

Grade Category Characteristics & Performance Ideal Applications
High Impact PU (Standard) Characteristics: Simulates the feel of TPO or modified PP. Semi-rigid (Shore D 60-65). Excellent balance of stiffness and flexibility.
Performance: Structural enough to hold shape, flexible enough to absorb hits.
Automotive fascias, spoilers, rocker panels, tractor fenders, industrial machinery covers.
Semi-Flexible PU Characteristics: Softer and more rubber-like (Shore A 85 - Shore D 50). Higher elongation and tear strength.
Performance: Focuses on cushioning and extreme durability.
Soft-touch overmoldings, heavy-duty bumpers, vibration isolators, protective end-caps.
Microcellular Elastomer Characteristics: Contains micro-bubbles to reduce density while maintaining a solid skin. Lighter than solid elastomers.
Performance: Lightweight toughness.
Weight-sensitive automotive trim, large aerodynamic fairings.

Design & Processing Guidelines

  • Wall Thickness: Can vary from 3mm to 10mm. Thicker sections provide more "cushioning" effect but increase cycle time.
  • Undercuts: The flexibility of the material allows for significant undercuts to be demolded without complex slides in the tooling, reducing mold cost.
  • Bosses & Ribs: Should be designed with generous radii to prevent stress concentrations during flexing.
  • Shrinkage: Elastomeric materials generally shrink more than rigid ones; our engineers calculate precise shrinkage rates for tool design.

Application Scenarios

Elastomeric RIM is the standard for "Moving & Bumping" parts:
  • Automotive Exterior: Front/rear bumpers, side skirts, air dams, spoilers.
  • Construction & Agriculture: Tractor hoods, mudguards, rock guards for excavators.
  • Industrial Equipment: Forklift bumpers, conveyor belt skirting, robotic protective skins.
  • Marine: Dock bumpers, flexible hull guards.
