Rigid RIM Systems (Simulating ABS)
When your project requires large, lightweight, and structurally rigid plastic components without the prohibitive tooling costs of standard injection molding, Rigid RIM (Reaction Injection Molding) is the superior choice. This thermoset polyurethane system is chemically engineered to simulate the high stiffness, impact strength, and surface quality of engineering thermoplastics like ABS. At JUCHENG, we leverage this technology to bridge the gap between prototyping and low-volume production. Our facility specializes in casting massive, complex enclosures—such as medical MRI covers and industrial kiosks—delivering parts that offer exceptional dimensional stability and a premium surface finish ready for painting.

JUCHENG's Rigid RIM Capabilities

Producing large-format RIM parts requires specialized low-pressure metering equipment and extensive mold-making expertise. JUCHENG delivers:
  • Large-Scale Molding: Our large-platen clamping presses allow us to mold single-piece parts up to 2 meters in length, eliminating the need to bond smaller sections together.
  • Low-Cost Tooling: Unlike high-pressure injection molding that requires hardened steel, our Rigid RIM process utilizes cost-effective Aluminum or Epoxy molds, significantly reducing upfront investment and lead time.
  • Encapsulation: We excel at Insert Molding, encapsulating metal frames, threaded inserts, or glass windows directly into the rigid polyurethane for enhanced structural integrity.
  • Class-A Finishing: Rigid RIM parts come out of the mold ready for finishing. Our in-house painting facility applies EMI shielding, textures, and high-gloss automotive paints to meet strict cosmetic standards.

Advantages of Rigid RIM Systems

Advantage Detailed Description Key Benefit
Design Freedom Supports variable wall thicknesses (from 3mm to 30mm) in the same part without sink marks. Allows for integrated ribs, bosses, and thick mounting points without cosmetic defects.
High Stiffness-to-Weight Solid, non-porous material with excellent structural rigidity. Ideal for self-supporting enclosures and load-bearing housings.
Low Injection Pressure Material flows easily into the mold at low pressure (<100 psi). Enables the use of lower-cost tooling and molding of very large, complex geometries.
Superior Surface Finish Replicates mold textures perfectly (high gloss or matte). Reduces post-processing time; provides an excellent substrate for painting.
Chemical Resistance Resistant to common cleaning agents, acids, and solvents. Suitable for medical environments requiring frequent sterilization.

Technical Parameters & Material Properties

We formulate specific Rigid RIM systems to meet diverse industrial requirements:

Grade Category Characteristics & Performance Ideal Applications
Standard Rigid RIM Characteristics: Simulates general-purpose ABS. Good balance of stiffness and impact strength. Paintable surface.
Performance: Reliable structural integrity for everyday use.
Electronic enclosures, instrument bezels, office equipment housings, custom kiosks.
High-Temp Rigid RIM Characteristics: Enhanced thermal stability with a higher Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT > 100°C). Resists warping near heat sources.
Performance: Maintains stiffness in hot environments.
HVAC covers, lighting housings, machinery guards near motors, under-hood components.
Flame Retardant RIM Characteristics: Formulated to meet UL94 V-0 flammability standards. Self-extinguishing material.
Performance: Essential for safety compliance.
Medical Carts, MRI/CT machine covers, aerospace interiors, laboratory equipment.

Design & Processing Guidelines

  • Wall Thickness: Optimal wall thickness is 4mm to 10mm. RIM can handle thicker sections without sinking, unlike thermoplastics.
  • Draft Angles: We recommend a draft angle of 1° to 2° to facilitate easy demolding from the aluminum tool.
  • Ribs & Bosses: Strengthening ribs should be designed to support large flat areas. Thanks to low pressure, ribs can be thicker than in standard injection molding.
  • Inserts: Threaded metal inserts can be molded-in or heat-staked post-process for durable assembly points.

Application Scenarios

Rigid RIM is the industry standard for "Big & Tough" parts:
  • Medical Devices: Large covers for X-ray machines, ultrasound carts, dialysis machines, and diagnostic analyzers.
  • Scientific Instruments: Housings for spectrometers, laboratory automation robots.
  • Automotive & Transport: Truck dashboards, armrests, oversized interior panels, tractor fenders.
  • Industrial: Housings for ATMs, gaming machines, heavy-duty electrical cabinets.
