AISI 4130 Alloy Steel CNC Machining Material
AISI 4130, commonly known as "Chromoly", is a low-alloy steel containing chromium and molybdenum. While it shares many high-strength characteristics with 4140, its lower carbon content (0.30%) is a game-changer: it makes 4130 vastly superior for welding. This unique combination of high tensile strength and weldability makes it the standard material for fabricated structural assemblies in the aerospace and motorsports industries. At JUCHENG, we machine complex 4130 fittings, lugs, and brackets that serve as critical nodes in welded frames, ensuring that the machined components match the performance of the tubing they connect.

JUCHENG's 4130 Machining Capabilities

We specialize in producing machined components that are ready for high-stakes assembly:
  • Complex Fittings & Lugs: We machine intricate connectors used to join tubular structures in aircraft fuselages and race car chassis.
  • Weld-Ready Prep: We understand that these parts will be welded. Our machining process includes precise chamfering and surface preparation to ensure perfect weld penetration.
  • Heat Treatment: We offer Normalizing and Stress Relieving services post-machining to ensure the part structure is uniform and free of internal stresses before it reaches your welders.
  • Tight Tolerances: We maintain H7/g6 tolerances on bearing surfaces and pivot points often integrated into 4130 suspension components.

Advantages of CNC Machining 4130

Advantage Detailed Description Key Benefit
Superior Weldability Can be welded by all commercial methods without the high risk of cracking seen in 4140. The #1 choice for parts integrated into welded assemblies and frames.
High Strength-to-Weight Offers excellent strength (Yield ~460 MPa Normalized) allowing for thinner, lighter wall sections. Critical for weight reduction in aircraft and automotive racing.
Good Machinability Machines relatively easily in the annealed or normalized condition. Allows for the creation of complex geometries and internal features cost-effectively.
Through-Hardening Can be heat treated for higher strength, though less hard than 4140. Good for structural parts requiring uniform core strength.
Impact Resistance Excellent toughness and ductility. Withstands shock loads in suspension systems and landing gear.

Technical Parameters & Material Standards

We process 4130 to meet strict aerospace and industrial specifications:
Grade Category Specification Characteristics & Ideal Uses
AISI 4130 (Normalized) Condition N Characteristics: Heat treated to refine grain structure. Provides higher strength than annealed state while maintaining good machinability. The most common state for structural parts.
Uses: Aircraft engine mounts, roll cage brackets, suspension arms.
AISI 4130 (Annealed) Soft State Characteristics: Maximum ductility and lowest hardness. Easiest to machine and cold form. Usually normalized after machining.
Uses: Parts undergoing significant forming or bending before final use.
AMS 6348 / 6350 Aerospace Spec Characteristics: High-quality vacuum-melted steel meeting Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS).
Uses: Critical flight safety hardware, helicopter components.

CNC Machining Guidelines 4130

  • Surface Finish: 4130 can be machined to a very smooth finish. However, it requires sharp tools to prevent tearing the material in the annealed state.
  • Corrosion: Like all low-alloy steels, 4130 rusts easily. Parts must be oiled, painted, or plated (Cadmium/Zinc) immediately after machining.
  • Hardening: While it can be water-quenched, oil quenching is recommended to prevent cracking. It is typically used in the normalized condition rather than fully hardened for maximum toughness.
  • Welding Prep: Machined surfaces intended for welding must be kept free of coolant residue and oils to prevent weld porosity.

Application Scenarios

  • Motorsports: Suspension knuckles, roll cage gussets, steering columns, chassis brackets.
  • Aerospace: Engine bearers, fuselage fittings, landing gear struts (light aircraft).
  • Oil & Gas: Valve bodies and pumps requiring toughness in cold environments.
  • Bicycles: High-end frame lugs, dropouts, and fork crowns.
  • Defense: Components for light tactical vehicles and weapon mounts.
