Professional Metal Heat Treatment Solutions
Machining creates the shape, but Heat Treatment defines the performance. It is the controlled process of heating and cooling metals to alter their physical and mechanical properties without changing the product shape. Whether you need to increase hardness for wear resistance, improve ductility to prevent cracking, or relieve internal stresses for dimensional stability, precision heat treatment is essential for high-performance engineering components.
At JUCHENG, we integrate heat treatment into our manufacturing workflow. From Vacuum Hardening of tool steels to Case Hardening of automotive gears, we partner with certified thermal processing facilities to ensure your parts achieve the exact Rockwell (HRC) hardness and microstructure specified in your engineering prints.
Heat Treatment

JUCHENG’s Thermal Processing Capabilities

We offer a full spectrum of thermal treatments tailored to material type and application:
  • Through Hardening (Quench & Temper): Heating the entire part and quenching it to achieve uniform hardness throughout the cross-section. Ideal for high-strength bolts and structural alloy steels (4140, 4340).
  • Case Hardening (Carburizing): Diffusing carbon into the surface of low-carbon steels to create a hard, wear-resistant "case" while maintaining a tough, ductile core. Perfect for gears and shafts.
  • Vacuum Heat Treatment: Performed in a vacuum chamber to prevent surface oxidation and scaling. Essential for precision tool steels (D2, A2) and stainless steels (440C, 17-4PH) to maintain a bright, clean finish.
  • Nitriding / Nitrocarburizing: A low-temperature process that diffuses nitrogen into the surface, creating a hard, corrosion-resistant layer with minimal distortion.
  • Annealing & Stress Relief: Controlled heating and slow cooling to soften the metal, improve machinability, or remove internal residual stresses caused by machining or welding.

Material Class Common Grades Typical Treatments
Tool Steels D2, A2, O1, H13 Vacuum Hardening & Tempering (50-62 HRC).
Alloy Steels 4140, 4340, 4130 Quench & Temper (Q&T), Nitriding, Induction Hardening.
Stainless Steel 17-4 PH, 440C, 420 Precipitation Hardening (H900), Vacuum Hardening.
Carbon Steel 1018, 1045, 1215 Carburizing (Case Hardening), Normalizing.
Aluminum 6061, 7075 Solution Heat Treatment & Aging (T6) - usually done at the mill, but we can re-treat if needed.

Comparison

Comparison: Through Hardening vs. Case Hardening
Which hardening method fits your design?
Feature Through Hardening Case Hardening
Effect Hardens the entire part (Surface + Core). Hardens only the outer skin (0.5mm - 2mm).
Core Property Hard but Brittle. Tough and Ductile (Absorbs shock).
Materials Medium/High Carbon Steels (1045, 4140). Low Carbon Steels (1018, 8620).
Wear Resistance Good. Excellent (Surface is harder).
Distortion Risk Higher (Due to rapid quenching). Lower.
Best For Structural strength, fasteners. Gears, shafts, wear plates.

Why Choose Us

  • Distortion Management: Heat treatment causes metal to move. We leave precise grinding allowances on critical dimensions and use specialized fixturing to minimize warping during the quench cycle.
  • Certified Reports: We provide heat treatment charts and hardness inspection reports (Rockwell C/B or Brinell) with every shipment, ensuring accountability.
  • Integrated Grinding: Since hardened parts are often distorted, we offer in-house precision grinding to bring the part back to final tolerance after heat treatment.
  • Clean Surfaces: Our use of vacuum furnaces means your parts return bright and clean, not covered in black scale that requires expensive sandblasting to remove.

Advantages

  •  Wear Resistance: Significantly extends the life of moving parts by preventing surface abrasion and galling.
  • Strength: Increases the yield and tensile strength, allowing for lighter, stronger designs.
  • Dimensional Stability: Stress relief prevents parts from warping over time or during subsequent machining operations.
  • Impact Resistance: Proper tempering makes brittle materials tough enough to withstand shock loads.

Industries Served

  • Automotive: Transmission gears, camshafts, crankshafts, suspension components.
  • Aerospace: Landing gear struts (High strength steel), turbine blades.
  • Tool & Die: Stamping dies, injection molds, cutting punches.
  • Oil & Gas: Drill bits, valve bodies, high-pressure fittings.
  • Medical: Surgical instruments (Hardened Stainless Steel).
