Precision CNC Machining of Aluminum 2014
When structural integrity under extreme load is the primary design requirement, Aluminum Alloy 2014 is the material of choice. As a member of the 2000-series family, it is a precipitation-hardened alloy with copper as its principal alloying element. This chemistry provides it with exceptionally high strength and hardness, approaching that of some steels, especially in the T6 temper. At JUCHENG, we have the expertise to machine this challenging "hard aluminum." We utilize rigid machine setups and specialized tooling to deliver high-performance components for the aerospace, military, and heavy transport industries where strength cannot be compromised.

JUCHENG's 2014 Machining Capabilities

Machining copper-alloyed aluminum requires different strategies than 6000-series alloys. We offer:
  • Rigid Machining Centers: The hardness of 2014-T6 requires high-torque, rigid CNC machines to prevent tool chatter and maintain tight tolerances.
  • Chip Control: We use high-pressure coolant to manage the abrasive nature of the chips and prevent them from re-cutting the part surface.
  • Protective Coatings: Since 2014 has poor corrosion resistance, we provide in-house Chromate Conversion Coating (Alodine) or Anodizing to protect the finished part from the environment.
  • Stress Management: 2014 can be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. We can source T651 temper (stress-relieved) material for critical applications to ensure long-term stability.

Advantages of CNC Machining 2014

Advantage Detailed Description Key Benefit
Very High Strength Significantly higher yield and tensile strength than 6061-T6. Allows for robust, lightweight designs in high-load structural applications.
High Hardness Offers excellent resistance to wear and deformation under compressive loads. Ideal for fittings, brackets, and structural components that endure heavy use.
Good Machinability In the T6 temper, it produces small, broken chips, leading to good surface finishes. Allows for efficient production of complex, high-strength parts.
High Temperature Performance Retains its strength at elevated temperatures better than 6000 or 7000 series alloys. Suitable for truck engine components and aerospace parts near heat sources.

Technical Parameters & Material Standards

We process this high-strength alloy in its most common tempers:

Grade Category Specification Characteristics & Ideal Uses
Aluminum 2014-T6 AMS 4153 Solution heat treated and artificially aged. Maximum hardness and strength. The standard temper for machining structural parts.
Uses: Aerospace fuselage structures, military vehicle frames, truck chassis components.
Aluminum 2014-T651 Stress-Relieved Stretched after heat treatment to reduce internal stress. Exhibits greater stability after heavy machining and resists stress corrosion cracking.
Uses: Thick, heavily milled plates, critical aerospace components.
Alclad 2014 Coated Sheet A thin layer of pure aluminum is bonded to the surface to provide corrosion protection. Primarily used for sheet applications but also available for machining.
Uses: Aircraft skins and structures exposed to the elements.

CNC Machining Guidelines for 2014

  • Tool Wear: The high copper content and hardness make 2014 more abrasive on cutting tools than 6061. We use coated carbide tools and monitor tool life carefully.
  • Corrosion Control: 2014 will corrode rapidly if left unprotected. Machined parts must be immediately cleaned, dried, and coated (anodized or painted).
  • Welding: Not Recommended. The copper alloying elements make it highly susceptible to cracking during welding. Design should rely on bolted or riveted assembly.
  • Anodizing: Can be anodized, but the resulting oxide layer is less clear and protective compared to that of 6061. Hard anodizing (Type III) is often used for wear resistance.

Application Scenarios

  • Aerospace: Main fuselage structures, wing ribs, spars, and landing gear components.
  • Military & Defense: Armor plates for military vehicles, weapon components, structural frames.
  • Heavy Transport: Truck frames, chassis components, suspension arms.
  • Industrial: High-strength machine parts that require good performance at high temperatures.
