S235JR is the most widely used non-alloy structural steel in the European standard EN 10025. The name itself defines its properties: "S" for Structural, "235" for the minimum yield strength (MPa), and "JR" indicating it meets impact testing requirements at 20°C. S235JR Material No. 1.0038 Characteristics: Hot rolled structural steel. Tensile strength 360-510 MPa. Good ductility. Surface usually has mill scale (black/blue).
Uses: Building structures, bridge components, vehicle chassis, machine base plates.
Equivalent Grades ASTM A36 / Q235B Characteristics: While chemical compositions vary slightly, these are generally considered interchangeable for non-critical structural applications.
Uses: General heavy industry.

CNC Machining Guidelines for S235JR

  • Scale Removal: The hard oxide scale on hot-rolled S235JR can wear out tools. We often face-mill the skin first with tough inserts before finishing.
  • Stress Relief: Large welded S235JR frames contain residual stress. We recommend Stress Relief Annealing before final machining to ensure flatness and dimensional stability.
  • Tolerances: Due to internal stresses in hot-rolled steel, holding microns is difficult. Standard machining tolerances (+/- 0.05mm) are recommended over precision grinding tolerances.
  • Corrosion: It will rust rapidly. Parts must be oiled, painted, or galvanized immediately.
