5000 Series (The Sheet Metal King) 5052 The most widely used alloy for sheet metal. Highest strength of the non-heat-treatable grades. Excellent fatigue strength and corrosion resistance (Marine grade). Bends easily without cracking. Precision chassis, electronic cabinets, fuel tanks, marine parts.
6000 Series (Structural) 6061-T6 / 6063 Heat-treatable structural alloys. 6061 is strong but brittle during tight bending (requires large radius). 6063 is excellent for cosmetic panels and extrusions. Structural brackets, automotive frames, heavy-duty base plates, cosmetic front panels.
3000 Series (General Purpose) 3003 Alloyed with manganese. 20% stronger than 1100 series. Very good workability and weldability. Moderate strength. Chemical equipment, general sheet metal parts, cooking utensils, decorative trim.
1000 Series (Pure Aluminum) 1060 / 1010 99.6% pure aluminum. Extremely soft and ductile. Highest thermal and electrical conductivity. Low mechanical strength. Heat shields, electrical busbars, chemical tanks, reflector plates, deep-drawn parts.

Fabrication Guidelines for Aluminum Sheet

  • Bending Radius:
5052/3003: Can accept tight bend radii (approx 1x thickness).
6061-T6: Prone to cracking. We recommend a minimum bend radius of 2-3x thickness or annealing the bend line.
  • Grain Direction: Aluminum sheet has a "grain" from rolling. For critical structural bends, we orient the bend line across the grain (perpendicular) to maximize strength and prevent cracking.
  • Welding: We use AC TIG welding for thin sheets to break the oxide layer without burning through the material. 5052 and 3003 are excellent for welding; 6061 requires post-weld heat treatment considerations.
  • Surface Protection: Aluminum scratches easily during handling. We leave the PVC protective film on the sheet during laser cutting and forming, removing it only at the final inspection stage.
