Axson UP 5690 Vacuum Casting Material
Standard prototyping resins often suffer from brittleness, failing under stress or impact. Axson UP 5690 is engineered to solve this challenge. It is a high-performance polyurethane resin designed specifically to simulate the ductility and toughness of Polypropylene (PP) and HDPE. At JUCHENG, we recommend UP 5690 for functional prototypes that must undergo rigorous mechanical testing. Whether you are validating a snap-fit connector that needs to flex without snapping or a housing that must survive drop tests, our vacuum casting process ensures this material delivers the resilience your design requires.
Axson UP 5690
Basic Characteristics & Composition
Axson UP 5690 is formulated to bridge the gap between rigid plastics and flexible elastomers.
- PP/HDPE Simulation: It replicates the semi-flexible feel and distinct "give" of production-grade Polypropylene.
- High Elongation: Unlike ABS-like resins which snap when bent, UP 5690 can stretch and bend significantly before failure.
- Impact Resistance: It absorbs shock energy effectively, making it ideal for parts subjected to dynamic loads.
- Living Hinge Capability: It is one of the few casting resins capable of prototyping functional "living hinges" (thin integrated hinges) that can be folded repeatedly.
Color Options
- Standard: White / Off-White.
- Coloring: Can be easily pigmented to specific colors (e.g., Black, Grey, Blue) during the mixing stage at JUCHENG.
- Painting: While paint adhesion on PP-like materials can be tricky, this PU resin accepts primers and paints better than actual Polypropylene plastic.
Key Technical Parameters
1. Mechanical Properties (Typical values after post-curing):
2. PROCESSING
4. STORAGE
| Property | Value | Unit | Standard |
| Hardness | 80 - 82 | Shore D | ISO 868 |
| Flexural Modulus | 1,000 - 1,200 | MPa | ISO 178 |
| Tensile Strength | 45 - 50 | MPa | ISO 527 |
| Elongation at Break | 15 - 25 | % | ISO 527 |
| Heat Deflection Temp (HDT) | > 50 | kJ/m² | ISO 179 |
| Impact Strength (Charpy) | 70 - 80 | °C | ISO 75 |
| Linear Shrinkage | 0.3 - 0.4 | % | - |
2. PROCESSING
- Vacuum Casting: Processed in silicone molds under vacuum to prevent air entrapment, which is critical for maintaining structural integrity in flexible parts.
- Pot Life: Approx. 10 minutes. Sufficient for filling complex molds with thin wall sections.
- Demolding: 60 minutes at 70°C.
- Curing: Requires thermal post-curing to develop full impact strength and flexibility.
3. PRECAUTIONS
- Thickness Sensitivity: Thin sections (< 1mm) will be quite flexible; thick sections will be rigid. Designers should account for this variable flexibility.
- Moisture: Like all PUs, it is sensitive to humidity. JUCHENG handles all raw materials in controlled low-humidity environments.
4. STORAGE
- Conditions: Store between 15°C and 25°C in original sealed containers.
Application Scenarios & Fields
Axson UP 5690 is the go-to material for "dynamic" applications:
- Automotive: Interior clips, cable ties, bumper prototypes, glove box latches.
- Consumer Goods: Shampoo bottle caps (flip-tops), durable protective cases, snap-together enclosures.
- Industrial: Flexible hoses, vibration dampening mounts, conveyor belt clips.
- Robotics: Gripper fingers, protective skins, impact-prone structural covers.
Vacuum Casting Process Compatibility
- Silicone Tooling: Excellent compatibility. The resin is not aggressive towards molds, allowing for a good number of copies.
- Surface Finish: Due to its softer nature compared to ABS-like resins, high-gloss polishing is difficult. A Satiny or Matte finish (VDI texture) is recommended and looks most realistic for PP parts.
- Machining: Can be drilled and trimmed, but cutting speeds should be adjusted to prevent the material from melting or gumming.
Advantages vs. Limitations
| Advantages | Limitations |
| Extreme Toughness: Will not shatter when dropped. | Polishing: Difficult to achieve a mirror-like finish (tends to be hazy/matte). |
| Snap-Fit Ready: Ideal for clips that need to flex and return. | Heat Resistance: Moderate (~80°C). Not suitable for high-heat under-hood areas. |
| Chemical Resistance: Good resistance to common fluids. | Rigidity: Less rigid than ABS-like resins; large flat parts may warp if not ribbed |
| Living Hinges: Can prototype flexible hinge features. |
