CNC machining FAQ

  • Q What are the main factors that affect the price?

    A

    The primary cost drivers are:

    • Material Cost: Type of material and the raw stock size required.

    • Machine Time: Part complexity and total machining time (driven by machine hourly rate).

    • Tolerances: Tighter tolerances increase cost.

    • Surface Finishing: post-processing like anodizing, powder coating, plating, etc.

    • Order Quantity: Higher volumes typically benefit from lower per-unit pricing.

  • Q Do you offer Design for Manufacturability (DFM) analysis?

A Yes, and we highly recommend it! Our engineers can review your design files free of charge and suggest optimizations to reduce cost, lead time, and improve quality without compromising functionality. This service often identifies significant savings.
  • Q Are there any design requirements?

    A

Please ensure your design is manufacturable. Key things to consider:

    • Wall Thickness: Avoid very thin walls to prevent vibration or deformation during machining.

    • Internal Corners: Cutting tools are cylindrical, so internal corners will have a radius (fillet), not a perfect sharp edge.

    • Deep Pockets/Holes: Very deep features may require special tools and can increase cost.

    • Engraved Text: Specify the size and depth of any text clearly.

  • Q What files do I need to provide for a quote?

    A

For the fastest and most accurate quote, please provide:

    • Preferred: 3D CAD model file (e.g., .STEP, .IGES, .XT).

    • Required: 2D engineering drawing (PDF or DWG) with all critical dimensions, tolerances, surface finish requirements, and material spec clearly called out.

    • We also offer reverse engineering services if you only have a physical sample or sketch.

  • Q What level of precision can you achieve?

A Our standard machining tolerance typically holds ±0.001" to ±0.005" (±0.025mm to ±0.125mm). For critical features and precision components, we can achieve tolerances as tight as ±0.0005" (±0.012mm) using specialized equipment and processes. Final accuracy depends on part size, geometry, and material.
  • Q What materials can you machine?

    A

We can machine a wide range of materials, including:

    • Metals: Aluminum (e.g., 6061, 7075), Stainless Steel (e.g., 303, 304, 316), Carbon Steel, Brass, Copper, Titanium.

    • Plastics: ABS, PC (Polycarbonate), POM (Acetal/Delrin), Nylon, PEEK, PTFE (Teflon).

    • Contact us if you have a specific material requirement.

  • Q What types of CNC machining services do you offer?

A We primarily offer CNC Milling (ideal for complex 3D shapes and pockets) and CNC Turning (ideal for cylindrical or conical parts). We also provide CNC Turning-Milling Combination services for complex parts that can be completed in a single setup.
  • Q What is CNC machining?

A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is a manufacturing process where pre-programmed computer software dictates the movement of factory tools (like mills, lathes, or routers). It efficiently and precisely transforms a digital design file (like a 3D CAD model) into a custom-manufactured part from metal or plastic.
  • Q When should I use machining versus injection molding?

    A
⦁ Before making the investment to have injection-mold tooling made or high-volume machining processes, you likely will want to test a part that is as close to the production part as possible. CNC machining is the best option for this situation.

⦁ Additionally, engineers often need just one or maybe a few parts for test fixtures, assembly jigs, or assembly fixtures. Machining is the best option here as well, but traditional machine shops often charge a significant non-recurring engineering (NRE) charge for programming and fixturing. This NRE charge often makes getting very small quantities not affordable. The automated CNC machining process eliminates the upfront NRE costs and is able to offer quantities as low as one part at an affordable price and get parts in your hands in as fast as 1 day.

  • Q Can Jucheng Precision provide optical quality on my plastic parts?

    A
Yes. We combine the machining capabilities of the best combined 3-axis, 4-axis or even 5-axis CNC milling machines. We also have adopted the latest diamond machining technology in ultra-precision manufacturing. This is a technique called Single Point Diamond Machining (SPDM or SPDT) that can match the ability of 5-axis micro-milling to produce a range of lens and light guides types of excellent optical quality in an array or freeform pattern. With the rich polishing experience, we can get amazing appearance on both inside and outside of the parts, providing fully support to clear and optical prototype development projects.

  • Q Can I order just one piece?

    A
Yes, of course you can, there is no minimum quantity at Jucheng Precision Prototypes, we will recommend you with the most suitable and effective manufacturing solutions based on your quantities.

  • Q What are the minimum and maximum dimensions you can machine?

    A
At Jucheng Precision Prototypes, we offer CNC milling (3-axis, 3+2-axis and 5-axis) and turning. Milled parts can be machined up to 1800mm*1200mm *500 mm (70.8* 47.2*19.6 in.)for 3/3+2 axis CNC milling. For 5-axis milling, the maximum part size is 650 x 650 x 300 mm (25.5 x 25.5 x 11.8 in.). If you accept splitting, there is no dimension limit.

The maximum diameter for CNC turning is 431mm (17 in.), length 990 mm (39 in). Minimum part dimensions recommended are around 0.39 x 0.39 x 0.39 in. (10 x 10 x 10mm).The minimum for feature dimensions is 0.5 mm.
