Your design requires a high-performance plastic that can withstand extreme heat. The default choice for many engineers is PEEK. But PEEK is one of the most expensive polymers on the planet. Is there a smarter alternative?
What if you need a material that offers outstanding high-temperature performance, but at a more accessible price point? What if it also needed to be inherently flame retardant?
This is where another elite polymer enters the conversation. A material with a unique combination of thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties. This is the world of pei plastic material, most famously known by its trade name, Ultem.

PEEK is an incredible material. It sits at the very top of the polymer performance pyramid. But that top spot comes with an extreme price tag. For many projects, it is simply too expensive.
This forces engineers to look for a high-value alternative. They need a material that can still deliver exceptional performance, but in a more cost-effective package.
PEI (Polyetherimide) is often the perfect answer to this dilemma. It is one of the few other types of plastics that can operate in the same high-temperature world as PEEK, but at a significantly lower cost. It is not a direct replacement, but a smart alternative.

The defining characteristic of PEI is its long-term heat resistance. It can handle continuous operating temperatures of around 170°C (338°F).
But more importantly, it maintains its mechanical strength and stiffness at these high temperatures. Other plastics might survive the heat, but they become soft and weak. PEI stays strong and rigid. This makes it an excellent choice for structural components in hot environments.
It also has excellent hydrolysis resistance. This means it can withstand repeated exposure to hot water and steam without degrading. This is a huge advantage. It is why PEI is a dominant material for reusable medical trays and instruments that must go through countless sterilization cycles in an autoclave.

Many plastics are flammable. To make them safe for use in airplanes or electronics, they need to have flame-retardant chemicals added to them. These additives can sometimes compromise the material's other properties.
PEI has a hidden talent. It is naturally, or "inherently," flame retardant. Its own chemical structure is extremely resistant to burning.
When exposed to a flame, it produces very little smoke. And the smoke it does produce has a low toxicity. This combination of properties is called FST (Flame, Smoke, and Toxicity) performance.
Because of its excellent FST rating without any additives, PEI is a top choice for the aerospace industry. It is used to make interior components for airplane cabins, like trim, latches, and food trays. This is a critical safety feature.

From a manufacturing perspective, pei plastic material presents challenges that are similar to other high-performance polymers.
It is a high-temperature material. This means it must be processed at very high temperatures during injection molding. The mold itself must also be heated to a very high temperature, often above 150°C. This requires specialized molding machines and temperature controllers.
The raw material must also be perfectly dried before processing. Any tiny amount of moisture will turn to steam at the high processing temperatures and ruin the part.
In CNC machining, PEI is a stable but hard material. It requires sharp tools and specific cutting strategies to achieve a good surface finish and avoid inducing stress in the part. Like PEEK, it is a material that demands expertise.

So when should you choose PEI for your project?
Choose PEI when you need excellent performance at high temperatures and good chemical resistance, but you do not need the absolute ultimate performance (and cost) of PEEK. It is a fantastic "value" choice in the high-performance category.
Choose PEI when your part must withstand repeated steam sterilization. This makes it a top choice for reusable medical devices.
And you must choose PEI (or a similar certified polymer) when your part needs to meet strict FST regulations for an aerospace application.
A manufacturing partner with experience in these demanding industries can provide critical guidance. At JUCHENG, we understand the specific personalities of these elite materials. We can help you make the smart choice that delivers the performance you need, within a budget that works.
