The most common family of steel is mild steel, or low-carbon steel. Grades like 1018 and 1045 are the true workhorses of the factory floor.

Their personality is strong but agreeable. They offer excellent strength and rigidity at a very low cost. But their real talent is their versatility. They are fantastic to work with.

Mild steel is easy to machine. It is also incredibly easy to weld, making it the top choice for fabricating strong, structural frames and brackets. This combination of properties makes it one of the most useful of all CNC machining materials. Its only real weakness is its poor corrosion resistance. It rusts easily. This is why a mild steel part almost always requires a protective finish, like zinc plating or powder coating.

Alloy Steel: Strength on a New Level

When you need a level of strength that mild steel cannot provide, you step up to the world of alloy steels.

An alloy steel, like the famous 4140 chromoly, is a steel that has had other elements (like chromium, molybdenum, manganese) added to its recipe. These elements give it "superpowers." They dramatically increase its strength, hardness, and toughness.

A common process for mild steel is "case hardening." The finished machined part is put through a chemical and heat process. This creates a very hard, wear-resistant outer "case," while leaving the inner core of the part softer and tougher. This "hard on the outside, tough on the inside" combination is perfect for parts like gears.

For alloy steels, a process of "quenching and tempering" is used. This full-body heat treatment can dramatically increase the hardness and strength of the entire part.

This ability to be heat-treated gives designers incredible flexibility. They can machine a part in a softer, easier state, and then harden it to achieve the final desired performance.
