Material Selection
The first step is to choose the appropriate materials for both the base and overmolding layers. These materials are selected based on mechanical properties, durability, flexibility, and aesthetic needs.
First Injection Cycle
The first material (typically a structural or base material) is injected into the mold. Common materials include engineering plastics like ABS, Nylon, and Polycarbonate.
Mold Rotation or Second Injection
After the first material cools and solidifies, the mold either rotates or shifts to position the part for the second injection. The second material, often a soft-touch or flexible material like TPE or TPU, is injected and adheres to the first material.
Final Cooling and Ejection
Once both materials are injected and cooled, the part is ejected from the mold, resulting in a fully integrated, multi-material component that meets both functional and aesthetic requirements.
